Am I a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Because consultation is a priority, the treatment process, risks, and benefits of laser hair removal will be thoroughly explained.
Almost anyone with dark unwanted hair is a candidate for laser hair reduction, including people with pigmented and tanned skin.
You will be asked to fill out a medical questionnaire which will be reviewed before treatment.
For some skin types, to help in the evaluation process, a skin test maybe performed at different energy levels to assess how your skin reacts.
The skin test allows you to know how the laser treatment feels and helps determine if you will need a topical anesthetic.
Some skin types and/or conditions require a waiting period while others may be treated the same day. The ideal candidate for most hair removal lasers has dark hair and light skin.
Darker hairs absorb more of the laser light, and lighter skin allows more transmission of the laser light not the hair follicle.
Although dark or tanned skin may run a higher risk of pigmentation changes following the procedure, the unique longer wavelength allows treatment of all but the darkest-skinned patients.
No other hair removal lasers have this property.
How long will it take to see results?
Some people will notice significant hair reduction after one treatment. However, because the laser only destroys hair follicles in the growth phase, multiple treatments are needed.
Optimum results are typically seen with darker hair colors after 4-6 treatments with sessions at one to two-month intervals and 4-10 treatments with lighter hair colors.
A treatment schedule will be prescribed based on factors unique to your hair and skin type, and the area being treated. Laser hair removal is a time-saving investment that pays for itself in long-term self-assurance and comfort.
This state-of-the art Candela GentleLASE® laser was specifically designed and FDA approved for permanent reduction of unwanted hair.
Features provide fast, gentle and precise treatment for all skin colors and all hair colors. When the laser pulses for a fraction of a second, the light emitted is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) contained in the hair follicle, damaging numerous follicles and their ability for re-growth.
Age, ethnicity, medication, hormone levels, and body site influence the length, coarseness and color of body hair. how much hair you have depends on how many hairs are in the active growth phase, and how long that phase lasts.
How many treatments will I need?
Interestingly, hair grows in cycles and not all hairs are actively growing at the same time. They actually go through three distinct phases: growth, regression, and resting.
Disabling hair that is principally in the active growth phase at the time of treatment is the goal. Since other hairs will enter this active growth phase at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all hair follicles in a given area.
Treatments are usually given at intervals of 4-6 weeks, depending on the particular area of the body being treated and the density of the hair in that area.
The number of treatments required depends upon your skin color, hair color and coarseness of the hair. Our staff will work with you to develop the best program that fulfills your needs.
Are the results permanent?
Laser Hair Removal delays the re-growth of the treated hair follicles. Because the laser treats hair follicles that are in an active growth phase.
More than one treatment will be required to disable hair follicles that subsequently enter this growth phase.
Hair grows in cycles and at any given time, only about one third of your hairs are active and growing.
Every 6-8 weeks the cycle shifts and resting follicles start growing hairs while active follicles shed their hair and enter a dormant state.
Only during the active growing stage can the hair be permanently removed with a light emitting device.
Also, re-growing hairs will be thinner and lighter than previously.
What happens after treatment?
Within several mintues, the treated area may become slightly red. This reaction usually subsides quickly and returns to normal within a day or so.
Depending on the area treated you should plan work or social engagements accordingly. Around day 3-7 after treatment you may experience what seems to be re-growth of hair.
Actually, most of these hairs are being shed as a result of your treatment and are not re-growth . In-between treatments you should not wax, pluck or bleach your hairs but it is permissible to shave.
How does the GentleLASE® system remove hair?
This laser targets the pigment located in the hair follicle and shaft. The light is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicle and this energy is converted to heat which results in damage to the hair follicle.
This damage causes delayed re-growth of the hair, and in most cases permanent destruction of many of the hair follicles. Unlike electrolysis, which kills one hair follicle at a time, the laser reaches and treats hundreds of follicles at a time.
Safely removing unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and surface of the skin. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in under ten minutes; legs, backs, and larger areas can take longer.
What does the treatment include?
Depending on the amount of hair treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. generally, the treatment will include:
- Wearing safety eyewear to protect the practitioner and patient's eyes from the laser light during the procedure.
- A small hand piece will be used that touches the skin to deliver the laser light.
- Depending on your skin and hair color we may test an area prior to the entire treatment. Your full treatment may be done on the same day or up to two weeks later, depending on the skin reaction.
- Most patients experience little discomfort at the treatment site.
- The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her pain threshold. Topical anesthesia may also be requested based on individual preference or tolerances. Be sure to discuss this with your practitioner in advance of the laser treatment.
- The procedure can take as little as 10 minutes or up to an hour, depending on the area treated.
- The treated area may become pink or red within 30 minutes of treatment; this may last from a few hours to several days and is relieved with the application of ice or cooling gels.
